Keeping Kids’ Teeth Safe this Summer!

There are simple steps parents and guardians can take to keep kids’ teeth safe while they are playing at home or with friends.

Bathtubs are fun, but can also be dangerous. Some of the most common tooth injuries occur in the bathtub. Along with the danger of drowning in the tub, adults should remember that toddlers and babies are also prone to slipping! It’s very easy for them to fall and damage their teeth. Never leave your baby or toddler unattended in the bathtub.

When kids are at play, things get thrown! Like baseballs, frisbees (sticks!) and other objects. Make sure you talk to your children about play safety for themselves and for others. Toys are not meant to be thrown towards another child’s head. Also, make sure your child wears the appropriate gear for the sport they are playing.

Bikes are fun, falls are not! Bike helmets do more than protect a child’s head, they can also protect their teeth! Falling off a bike can cause your jaw to slam shut which could damage your teeth.

Playground equipment (swings, money bars, etc) are not soft! Tell your children to be careful before going on the playground. No running in busy crowded areas between the swings! Save the running for the open grassy fields.

Plan Ahead for Emergencies
Even when children and adults are very careful, accidents can happen. If your child hurts their tooth, or worse, knocks one out, do not panic. If it is an adult tooth, or a baby tooth that wasn’t about to fall out on its own, try to pop it back in place. Then, head directly to your dental office. They will do everything possible to reattach the tooth.

If your child does lose a tooth and you can’t put it back in place, store it in some milk to keep it alive while you drive directly to your dental office. Don’t try to clean it and do not put it in a glass of water.

This could kill the root. The faster you get the tooth to the office, the better the chances for tooth survival.

We hope you have a fun and safe summer!
